Laurel Road Dump
City: Venice
GPS: N27 11.566 W82 23.761
The Laurel Road dump in Venice can be a productive location. It is located just off I-75 at Laurel Road Exit 195. The most common species to be found here are Bald Eagles, Vultures (both types) and hawks. This can be a challenging location for acceptable backgrounds. Wind out of the east in the morning and west in the afternoon will make this location more productive. There is a retention pond or two on the grounds that can be productive for various waders. It is usually fine to park out of the way and walk around the barricades to photograph birds at the pond.
They ask that you check in and out with the office before entering the grounds, I would inquire further about accessing the pond(s) when signing in. There are also some other retention ponds in the area that can be just as productive. Be alert for alligators.
Directions: From I-75 exit on Laurel Road #195, head east
to Knight Trail Road make a left on Knight Trail Road and continue till the
end which will be the entrance to the dump, it about 5 miles or so. Remember
to
sign
in and out.
